Lo2: Task 2: Understand How Sound Elements are Produced for Media Products

A) Sound Effect:

A Sound effect is used in just about everything and most things are done by a foley artist, this is someone who works with all different kinds of sounds to fit sounds with the visuals in a film, TV show, animation or adverts. They would work on the more detailed and closer feeling sounds, this does not include things like wind or sound of a car engine. This can be things like,
Doors:
Horses running:
Skin touching:
Dress movement:

B) Atmospheric Sounds:

Atmospheric sounds are rather similar to the way that sound effects are created. Quite a lot of the time you would fine that more atmospheric sounds are more difficult to create with a good success rate without using specialist equipment. A foley artist would be used to create quite a few of the more difficultly obtained atmospheric sound but most of the time they would be easily accessible from the shoot location, so it would be someone's job to go out and record all of the sounds needed that would be easily obtainable, this could be things like.
Traffic:
Wind rustling trees:
Birds tweeting:
Busy streets:

Example of atmospheric sound:
At the start of this clip you have have got some atmospheric sound effects in the form of the soldiers and other members of Robb Starks army making merry and drinking. This is atmospheric due to it being in the background of the clip and also adding depth to the feeling of a battle camp or war zone.

C) Music:

Music is recorded in a studio and is placed over the top of the scenes after. The music is used throughout films, games, tv shows, radio shows or adverts in order to give a feeling to the audience about what is happening on screen and depending on this depends on how it is produced. For example, if the film and sounds are of the Si-fi genre then the sounds would more likely be made and done on the computer using more digital music.

D) Dialogue:

Dialogue is always the most important things to get when out filming actually on location, the dialogue is all of the talking between characters in the film, tv show or game. You will often find that dialogue is all filmed on location as the actors are there, microphones with be attached to the actors collar so to get the best and clearest sound possible. Some dialogue in animation or games would be recorded separately in a sound booth and then edited and synced over the top of whatever it is voicing.
