Lo1: Task 1: Understand how sound elements are used in media products

Film - Star Wars: Episode V

The first sound element I have looked into is at 0:21 Darth Vaders breathing. The purpose of this sound is to let the viewer know who it is that is coming and talking to Luke before you see him. His breathing is a noticeable and rememberable sound this makes it associated with him and allows the viewer to know who it is before he has even spoken.
The sound has a few different elements associated with it, the breathing is a very atmospheric sound which changes the mood of the film upon being heard. This changes so as to make you feel or think a certain way about Darth Vader and what he stands for, the dark side of the force. In the middle of the sound effect he starts talking, his voice and they dialect he speaks in are both dark but connote knowledge or past experience of the character to the audience.
Lastly the meaning of this sound is to get the audiences attention and so that they will instantly know he is there. It also gives the audience a quick thought of what might happen in the next scene due to his arrival as the character being there suggests what is about to happen.

The second sound element I analysed is at 0:40 this is of the lightsabres being drawn. The purpose of this sound effect is to make the sabre being drawn has an impressive and rememberable sound which can be related to at anytime of the film. When that sound is played the viewer instantly knows what is about to come, which would get them excited or ready for the proceeding fight.
That specific sound element has but a few different elements within itself. It is an atmospheric sound as it really creates a feeling and atmosphere to the film that everyone who has seen the film will know of, upon hearing the sound the audience knows they are to expect a lightsabre battle. It is an incidental sound effect as you know what to expect once the sound is head or played.
The meaning of the sound effect is to used to both enhance visuals so that the lightsabre has a more impressive and greater visual effect and to establish a certain mood. In this instance it is used to establish a mood of intensity as the two are about to fight.

Another sound effect is from 0:51 onwards to the end is of the lightsabres hitting one another and being moved around though the air. The main purpose of this sound is to add sound and effects to the sabres which makes it feel more real and have a greater visual effect on the audience.
The elements that are associated with the sound, it is an atmospheric sound that effects the audiences mood, when the sabres clash and the sound is played it gives the audience a sense of almost fear and the sound is powerful and makes you think about the strength behind them. This sound is perfectly partnered with the sound of the sabres being waved around in the air. It is also a sound effect which is used for the visual effect of the audience and to make it look or sound better.
The meaning of this sound is mostly to enhance visuals, establish a mood for the audience and create an effect on the audience. the mood and effect on the audience is similar as it could make them feel weak and or want to have the power possessed in the film.

At the time of 1:18 there is a very short piece of music played as Darth Vader hits the pipe next to where they are fighting. The main purpose of this music is to grab the audiences attention and make them feel a certain way.
The piece of music has different sound effect associated with it. The piece of music is mostly an atmospheric sound and effects the viewer of the film, this could be in the way it makes them feel shocked about how hard the hit was that the music was played over. It is also an incidental piece which shows something has happened which was quite dramatic or unexpected.
The meaning of the sound is mainly used to enhance the visuals of the film and what is happening in the shot, giving the viewer a specific feeling or emotion when the piece is played. It is also used to create tension on the scene as it gives you the thought that good may not win and that Darth Vader could/probably will in the fight as he is stronger than first anticipated.

The final sounds I looked at was from 6:25 - 6:38, The actual music starts at 6:29. This is typically known as Darth Vaders theme tune, it is considered to be one of the most famous theme tunes ever and known by everyone. The purpose of the theme being played when it was is simply to add a massive effect on the audience and so the audience will know what and who is in on and in the shot.
The elements associated with this is mainly a theme tune, this is so that the viewer will be able to tell instantly what is happening and who is coming onto shot. The difference with this use of the theme though is the shot is of Luke who has just found out Darth Vader is his farther, therefore the use of the theme is to emphasise the feeling that Darth Vader is his farther and they have a connection.
The meaning of the piece is to enhance the visuals and make the viewer feel a certain way about what is happening and also enhances the characterisation of Luke, it gives you an insight into what once

TV - Sherlock Holmes

As the clip starts there is music playing until 0:31. The purpose of this music is to add a very tense atmosphere in the clip, it is broken up by screams of Mrs Hudson (the woman who was captured) this also adds to the feeling that something bad has either just happened or is about to happen.
The music has a few elements of sound in it such as it being an atmospheric sound and incidental piece of music because of Mrs Hudson being taken and Sherlock Holmes discovering the scratch marks on the wall.
The meaning of the sounds are mainly to add effect to the visuals in the way it makes what has happened seem all the more vicious and like they have hurt an elderly lady. But it also is used to reinforce the genre of the TV show as it is a crime/mystery and the music helps to show that. It lastly has an effect on the audience, because the music is so intense it makes they audience think as thought the worst could have happened and could make you want to know more into what is going on.

Another sound that i picked up on is from the timer 0:30 onward to 0:38 during this time you have got the door opening, slow and steady footsteps of sherlock and the snivelling of Mrs Hudson. The purpose of this is to make the audience feel as though although its a bad situation Sherlock has it under control, this is shown through his slowly walking in a calm and controlled manner along with slowly opening the door as if he already knew what was happening in the room before he walked in.
The sound effects have different elements of sound which fit with the genre and work towards creating some kind of effect on the audience. The first sound (the door opening with a creek) is an atmospheric sound effect which is used to create a effect on the audience and make them feel a certain way, in this sense it could be interpreted as making the audience feel tense for Mrs Hudson but also relieved that Sherlock is there and how capable he is, this is also supported by the footsteps on the creaky floorboard and the tone in which Mrs Hudson speaks once Sherlock walks into the room.
The meaning of all of this is quite simply to create a mood and almost establish a tone for the rest of the scene in which Sherlock out wits the kidnappers. There is also a strong use of silence in this shot which can support this mood and tone of the scene.

The next sounds are from 1:00 up too 1:16 in that time you have a few sounds. The purpose of them are to give the audience a feeling as though they were there and also to pity Mrs Hudson. This is then closely followed by music starting as Sherlocks discovers more of the wounds which she has sustained from the men who took her, this then moves onto him planning the rescue.
The sound elements of the clip it falls into a few different categories. Music is the main element you notice when watching the clip which is used to try and make the audience feel a certain way towards the situation. It gives the feeling that Sherlock is losing control while looking over what has happened to Mrs Hudson. While the music gets louder the previous main sounds of Mrs Hudson crying becomes part of the wild track which makes her just barely hearable, and this then has an effect that makes it feel as though Sherlock is losing control and consensus almost but he then shortly after regains focus as the music stops and the room goes deadly silent.
The meaning of this short clip of sounds is to create and mood of the room, it gives the feeling that Sherlock is getting angry and starting to lose control of his calm nature. It is also used to enhance visuals of the scene as Sherlock looks over her wounds and what has happened to Mrs Hudson. Lastly the use of silence at the end is used to give the feeling that Sherlock has just gained control of the situation again and has a plan of what to do, this is supported by the line in which Sherlock says to break the silence "I believe I do."

The sounds from the time 1:57 up to 2:13 are ones in which I looked at, this is from the silence from the beginning to the more cheerful and relaxed music at the end. The purpose of the sounds are mostly to make the audience feel a certain way for Sherlock and what is happening in the room and the scene, it is also used to inform the viewer of what is happening in the shot or what is about to come.
The clip has many sound elements in which can effect the viewer in one way or another, the atmospheric sounds for instance from Mrs Hudson add a feeling of worry prior to Sherlock head butting the kidnapper and then once he has done so and apprehended the man, she then becomes more relieved and has less panic in her breathing. The music is another prominent feature of the clip, I find that the music in this clip is used at major points. To start with there is a use of silence which adds a feeling of unawareness and as though you don't know what Sherlock is planning on doing, once it has been done the music quickly changes to a still darker piece to add a feeling of shock with what he just did but also to show that they are not out of the situation yet. At the end of the clip you have more cheerful music as the car pulls up, this is done to show the end of the danger and that the car pulling up has someone in that is going to help.
The meaning of the clips sound is mostly used to create and certain effect in the shot. In this instance it is used to create tension on the characters.

Game - Doom 4 Gameplay (E3 2015)

The first main sound in the gameplay video is of the door opening which runs from 0:09 up too 0:16. The purpose of the sound effect is for to make the game feel more immersive and add to the realism of the game, it is also used as a memorable sound for the audience to hear and know what is coming up or happening. It will most of the time symbolise the transition between areas.
The sound has a few different sound elements within it. This can be the atmospheric sounds of the door opening which adds to the atmosphere to the game and makes you feel more immersive. You also have a wild track which is of all the metal clashing and falling in the background, this sound adds a deep amount of immersion to the game and gives you the sense that it could be real, that there is a bigger picture and things are happening outside of the FoV. You also towards the last second of the clip you have got the sound effect of the gun cocking and reloading. This sound effect also has the effect on the audience that it is giving immersion to the game and possibly making the audience feel like they are gaining a greater gaming experience towards the ultimate end goal of the game.
The meaning of the sounds are nearly all used in order to get a better feel to the game and giving a greater feel towards it along with the sounds you have got the animation which are both used to support a certain feeling in the game. This feeling is amplified from the sound effects which also enhance the genre of an FPS/Action/

Another selection of sounds is from the time of 0:46 until 1:00. The purpose of the sounds found are to make the game feel more immersive and as though the game is real life. The sounds are also very typical of the genre, the game is an Action/FPS/Horror so gunshots, screams and a fast paced movement system. You also have got plenty of background noise (wild track) of chains falling and molten metal cooling quickly.
In the clip you have got many different sound elements which make up the clip. These are wild tracks, this is used as a way to back up the genre and make the game feel more immersive. Atmospheric sounds, this is things like the screams of the enemies which are used closer to the player, this is again mostly used in order to add more immersion to the player and make it feel as real as possible. Then you have the sound effects of the guns firing or of the player as he kills an enemy with melee. This sound is used so that the game will actually feel as though you hit an enemy or shot them, the sounds are needed in order for the game to even come close to feeling real.
The meaning of all the sounds are nearly all used in order to enhance the gameplay and make the player feel it is more real. The sounds are also there to reinforce the games genre, this being FPS/Action/Horror. The shooting, violence, screaming all support this. At the start of the clip there is silence as the player walks into the appearing enemies, this silence is used quite heavily as a way to create tension on the player.

The next selection of sounds is from 2:35 up too 2:55, in this clip you have got mostly music, background noise but towards the end you hear screeching and footsteps running closer. The purpose of the sounds are mostly used to educate the player into what could possibly be coming, or about to happen. They also educate the player into that something is definitely coming from the sound of the footsteps. The music quite heavily supports this.
During the clip a few different sound elements are present which all work to give the player a better experience. You have got mainly atmospheric sounds along with a couple of sound effects towards the end, the atmospheric sounds in the clip are of someone or something screaming in the background  which really adds to the feeling of fear and suspense to the game.
Finally the meaning of the clip,  all of the sound in this clip are used to enhance the genre of the game and also used to create tension for the player so they will feel a certain way about what is happening on screen.

The section of 4:50 through to 5:15
